The Museum’s education team welcomes visits from student groups from all over the world. We can support courses in many subject areas, including Religious Education, world religions, Jewish history and multi-ethnic Britain. |
What kind of students visit you?
Students participate in the Museum’s education programmes for many reasons. They may be foreign language students, learning about British language and culture through a programme of organised visits. Their course may be looking at Jewish people as one of London's diverse minority communities. Many of our student visitors are training to teach Religious Education.
What can you provide for students?
Programmes can provide an introduction to Judaism, or an in-depth study of a particular topic, such as Jewish London, British Jewish history, aspects of the Holocaust, or Jewish life and practice in Britain today. A meeting with a Holocaust survivor can be arranged. Visits can include a lecture, a session in the temporary exhibition space at the West London Synagogue and an audio-visual presentation. Questions are encouraged, and frequently stimulate fascinating discussions!
"The presentation provided a wonderful historical context in which to understand
Jewish practice in London".

Can you offer training for student teachers?
Intensive in-service courses are available for teachers, including full-day, half-day and twilight sessions covering issues of planning, delivery and assessment.
Discovering Judaism
We specialise in providing half or one-day courses in Judaism for student teachers. These include both theoretical and practical elements, showing how the use of religious objects in the classroom can contribute to the affective dimension of pupils' learning. Religious artefacts and ceremonies are used to unravel layers of meaning within Judaism, providing opportunities for learning about and from religion. Each course for student teachers is individually planned with an Education Officer. Please contact us on 020 8371 7373 to discuss your requirements.
Holocaust Education
Teachers are guided on how to use, documents, photographs and testimonies to achieve quality learning, the opportunities for developing the moral and spiritual
dimension and cross-curricular links. In-service training sessions can be arranged in conjunction with the hire of one of the Museum’s touring exhibitions, or as a stand-alone course. For more information contact the Education Department on 020 8371 7373.
What if our students do not speak English?
If you do not have an interpreter with you, it may be possible to arrange a foreign language speaker, given prior notice. Please give us plenty of notice if you would like a foreign language speaker.
How much will our visit cost?
Visits cost between £1.50 and 2.50 per student (depending on programme). Please ask your group to bring their student cards with them. We ask that the group leader collects the money in advance, and pays for the group, rather than having students pay us individually.
